Objectives

  • Describe and recognize the different types of insomnia and identify the treatment options.  Explain how insomnia and sleep disorders impact people differently across age, gender, socio-economic status and other multicultural factors.
  • Recognize symptoms of narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and restless limb movement disorder and understand how to do preliminary assessments for each. 
  • Describe the impact caffeinated products have on adults and their sleep, and concentration.  Discuss the FDA recommended dose of caffeine for adults as well as compare caffeine dosages of commonly consumed beverages.
  • Explain when a client should be referred to a sleep medicine clinic for assessment, as well as know how to find accredited sleep centers in any state.
  • Discuss the current research related to sleep medication treatment of insomnia (over the counter and prescription) compared to treatment using behavioral methods.
