Working with Transgender and Gender Expansive (TGGE) Youth:
Ethical and Practical Considerations
Friday, January 29th, 2020, 9AM-12:15PM (one 15 minute break)
Three (3) Continuing Education Credits (1 Ethics Credit)
Presented by Dr. Anthony Alioto, Ph.D., ABPP
Target Audience:
The DPA plans and promotes programs serving the continuing educational needs of psychologists and professionals across a variety of disciplines. Through the provision of high quality programming, the DPA hopes to support psychologists and other mental health professionals in their commitment to provide ethical, culturally sensitive and competent services to our community.
Workshop Description:
With increased research and visibility around transgender (TG) youth, the number of pediatric TG health clinics as well as the number of TG youth presenting to mental health clinics has grown considerably. While many providers feel secure in their ability to provide general psychological services to youth, many feel ill-equipped to provide care to TG and gender expansive (GE) youth. This may be due to few training opportunities available, a lack of "context" around TG/GE issues, and concern with the many ethical issues that arise when providing care. The current workshop is designed to provide background and context for mental health practitioners who may not feel especially confident in their ability to help their TGGE clients. The workshop will review terminology, common presenting issues, best supportive practices, and ethical challenges for consideration.
