Workshop Overview: In many jurisdictions across the country, the demand for forensic evaluations outpace the supply of qualified evaluators. This workshop provides a basic overview of forensic evaluation methodology, such that practicing psychologists and other clinicians are introduced to assessment of competency to stand trial in a criminal proceeding along with related processes for court-involved evaluations. Participants will leave with basic knowledge of psycho-legal principles for each type of evaluation, along with resources and recommendations for further study. Objectives: 1. Articulate the basic methodology used in general forensic evaluation. 2. Describe the psycho-legal questions to be addressed in matters of competency to stand trial and related court-involved matters; 3. List resources for further study of forensic evaluation methodology and application in practice. Presenter Bio: Robin Belcher-Timme, Psy.D., ABPP, is board-certified in forensic psychology, and specializes in addressing questions before criminal courts across the country. Dr. Timme performs evaluations of competency to stand trial, mental state at the time of an alleged offense, violence risk appraisal, sentencing evaluations, and other questions incorporating psychology and the law. Additionally, Dr. Timme is a Senior Expert with Falcon Correctional and Community Services, Inc., where he provides consultation to justice systems interested in evolving access to justice and leaning into social reforms. In that capacity, Dr. Timme assists jurisdictions with reimagining the role of public safety as it relates to public health, aiming to improve justice outcomes and equity for the most marginalized citizens. Dr. Timme’s research interests include reducing the reliance on jails for those in behavioral health crises; reducing and eliminating reliance on solitary confinement within jails and prisons; and addressing the impact of toxic stress and trauma on those living and working across the justice system. Dr. Timme holds master’s degrees in education and criminal justice, in addition to a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology at Widener University. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship in forensic psychology at Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia, studying forensic evaluation at the Institute for Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy (ILPPP) at the University of Virginia.
